CITIUS - Interregional Centre of Ultrafast Photonic Technology for Spectroscopy

The goal of the CITIUS project is to build a new interregional center of excellence for both fundamental and applied state-of-the-art research in several scientific fields, - ranging from physics to chemistry and from biology to medicine - and is funded by the Program for cross-border Italy-Slovenia Cooperation 2007-2013.
CITIUS is a development of the STORAGE RING - FREE ELECTRON LASER group and now it involves six partners, located on the two sides of the border between Italy and Slovenia: the University of Nova Gorica (UNG), Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste, the LUXOR Laboratory of the CNR in Padova, the Institute for Organic Synthesis and Photoreactivity (ISOF) of the CNR in Ferrara, the company Kontrolni sistemi d.o.o. and the University of Ljubljana.
The new center of excellence will rely on the development of a state-of-the-art light source generating ultrashort optical pulses in the VUV and soft X-ray spectral range.
Aim of the project is also to contribute to the development of the new Free-Electron Laser FERMI@Elettra presently under commissioning at Sincrotrone Trieste. The strength of CITIUS relies on the different and complementary skills of the partners involved: development and exploitation of cutting-edge light sources (UNG and ELETTRA), realization high-order harmonic generation sources (LUXOR), light source mechanical stabilization (University of Ljubljana), development of light source control systems (Kontrolni sistemi d.o.o.), preparation of chemical samples to be studied with light (ISOF).
